For many Christians, knowing, or discerning, the will of God is hard for them. Probably what I am referring to are life’s big decisions, not just the mundane, although God cares about every aspect of our lives. Although, deciding what you want for breakfast is pretty much up to you. God cares about such things, but choosing pancakes over cereal is not going to cause you to fall short in God’s eyes. No, I think Christians worry about the big things in life, who to marry, where to work, how many children to have, for instance. I believe God guides us in all of our decisions, but he also wants us to be happy, so we have the freedom to choose in all these areas of life, as long as our decisions are not sinful or self-destructive.

I have found in my life, that whenever I am faced with a big decision to make, if I bring the matter before God, the Holy Spirit will guide me into all Truth. When I am praying through a decision, our LORD makes it very clear to me about what direction I should take. In Philippians 4:6-7, the Apostle Paul wrote, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” And this is exactly what happens when I pray about something, the LORD gives me a peace about it that surpasses all understanding.

So, the next time you are faced with a difficult decision, or even a not so difficult one, calm your heart, ask the Holy Sprit to guide you, and notice how He does. You will find that the peace of God is very distinct, and it is unmistakable when it settles in your heart.
