In my work as a counselor, my primary job is to help people resolve problems that are leading to things like depression and anxiety. Mental illnesses can come from various sources. Sometimes, there is something wrong in the body that leads to poor mental health. Depression and anxiety can also be the result of a chemical imbalance in the brain. Mental health problems can also result from situations in our lives, such as severe trauma. So, the reasons for mental health challenges can be wide and varied. But what do you do when faced with mental illness?

I have met many people with many different problems. No two problems are the same, just like no two people are the same. People may have similar problems, but the details of those problems can vary widely. A good therapist will understand that you cannot treat two different people in the same way. Everyone requires a unique approach. Now, I do use various forms of therapy, like solution focused therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy, but every client I’ve met responds differently to those therapies, and the solutions to their problems take different routes to success. That is why some clients are in therapy longer than others.

Over the years, I have learned to adapt to the uniqueness of each client. The key to understanding my clients is to listen carefully to their story. As unique individuals, they all have unique experiences, and they all deserve to be understood and respected.
