In Philippians 2:5-11, the Apostle Paul declared the following:“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (New King James Version)
Today, while I was driving, I saw a big roadside sign that declared, “Jesus is not God. The Son of God did not pre-exist in Heaven.” It was hard to believe that someone would put up a sign like that, paying for it with their hard earned money, to claim that the whole premise of Biblical Christianity is a lie. If what this sign says is true, then they are basically calling the Scriptures, the God-breathed Word of God, a false document, for throughout the Bible, God declares that His Son, the God-Man, would come and truly did come to save us from our sins and from the wrath of God the Father Himself.
In John 1:1-5, the Apostle states the following, which is a very clear and compelling Truth of God:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” (NKJV)
People who live in spiritual darkness cannot understand the salvation freely offered in our LORD Jesus. At best, they see the Bible as a bunch of nice stories, and at worst, they see it as a series of dangerous lies. There are people who study the Word of God as literature because let’s face it, it is a very nicely written book. I tell non-believers that the Bible is spiritually discerned, that you cannot grasp its true meaning unless God first saves you. Once you become a follower of Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit takes up residence in your heart, and it is He Who testifies to the Truth of God. The Holy Spirit confirms in all believers that God sent his Son Jesus to live, die, and rise again, all on our behalf, in order to save us from our sins and to save us from the wrath of our Righteous Heavenly Father.
The sign I saw on the road today didn’t really surprise me, considering the state of the world today. As the Second Coming of our LORD Jesus draws closer, the Bible predicts that the love of many will grow cold, and that many people will fall away from the faith. There will be a growing antagonism toward the things of God and toward His People. The beautiful part of the final act in human history is what our LORD Jesus promised in Matthew 24:29-31:
“Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.” (NKJV)
If our LORD Jesus is not God in the flesh, then these Scriptures are lying, and we are lost, dead in our sins. But Blessed be our Father in Heaven that these Scriptures are true! And exactly how do I know that to be the case? I know because our Precious Holy Spirit testifies in my heart that these things are true. I know they are true as certainly as I know I exist.
We need to comfort each other with these Scriptures, these promises of God, and we need to invite those who don’t yet know Jesus to come to Him, and the only way we can do that is by sharing the Gospel with them, and let the Holy Spirit of God draw them to Himself. This Christmas, let’s share our faith with everyone we love, for I, and many other believers, as well, have the growing sense that our time is short. Our LORD Jesus is coming soon. Hallelujah!
