List five things you do for fun.
In my counseling with my Clients, I often ask them to identify several interventions that they could do to develop better mental health. Sometimes, I get quizzical looks back, as they ask. “Like, what?” I then explain that doing things they enjoy will improve their mental well being. If they’re still stumped, and sometimes they are, especially if they’re deeply depressed or anxious, I give them a few suggestions. I ask them, what about spending quality time with your loved ones, doing things you enjoy? I might mention a couple of more things, but I want them to come up with their own ways of coping because I’m not the one who lives their lives. I tell them, I could sit here and tell you a million things that I enjoy doing, but unless you like those things, too, we’re not going to get very far in helping you with your mental health issues.
Having said that, there are many things that I love doing for fun. The prompt by WordPress today is to name five of the fun things I enjoy doing. So, without further ado, here they are, in no particular order:
- My beautiful Wife and I do a nightly devotion where we read the daily reading in Tabletalk Magazine (by Ligonier Ministries), then we spend some time in deep prayer. We have grown tremendously in our walk with God as a result of our devotion time. It is a lot of fun to spend time with my Wonderful Bride in God’s Word and in fervent prayer.
- I love to cook. I’ll cook anything, and I like to try new things all the time. Our LORD has given me a talent to know which spices go well together. In our cupboards are more than a hundred spices and concoctions of spices that I have created for everything, from vegetables to fish to chicken to pork, you name it. There’s nothing better than cooking a meal and enjoying it with your Family.
- I love to play video games. Mostly, I play Madden NFL Football and MLB the Show. These video games are simulations, so they look very real. In fact, one day my mother-in-law came to our home, and she saw me playing baseball, and she exclaimed, “Oh, what time did the Angel game start?!?” She was shocked that it was a video game. These games are a lot of fun to play, and they involve a lot of skill and strategy.
- My Wife and I have led Bible Study for many years. Our dear Friends are a Family to us. We get together to eat, have fellowship, and dive deeply into the Scriptures. We have a lot of fun, often playing games, praying for one another, helping each other, and basically doing life together.
- I also love to spend quality time with my Family. As mentioned before, we’ll eat together, among other things. We often play games, too. We’re very competitive with each other, but it’s all in the fun. We trade friendly barbs, and we laugh a lot.
So, there you have it, five things that I love to do for fun. There are a lot more that I could mention, but for the sake of brevity, these are my top five fun things to do.
One last thing, whatever you do in life, do it as unto the LORD. He has given us all these things to enjoy because He is a Good Father; therefore, we need to honor Him in everything we do.
