My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Our LORD Jesus Christ,
The other day I was pondering one of those imponderables. I was at a local bookstore, sitting in their cafe, blogging. When I’m at this place, I like to people watch, and I like to consider what different groups of people are talking about or why they are at the bookstore. I am also an astute observer of people. Years of doing counseling and a lifetime of walking with God have given me the ability to discern spiritually where people are in their walk or in their lack of walk with our LORD.
On this particular day, there was a young man who works at this bookstore, arranging books in the horror section, and he seemed so happy. I’ve seen this young man many times, and I sense that he is not walking with God. There is a darkness in him that is pervasive. I sense that he is a tare, a demoniac.
What got me that day was that this young man appears to live a very blessed life. He has a job that he loves. He interacts well with others; in fact, he’s helped me before, and he seems very friendly. So, I asked myself, who exactly is blessing this person. Is the enemy of our souls blessing him and by extension, all demons? Suddenly the following Bible verses came to me:
“You have heard that it was said, Love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. For He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward will you have? Don’t even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing out of the ordinary? Don’t even the Gentiles do the same?” – Matthew 5:43-47 (Holman Christian Standard Bible version of the Holy Bible)
If we unpack these words by Jesus, the first thing I notice is that our LORD asks us to pray for our enemies, and by doing so, we will be sons of our Father in Heaven. The second thing I notice is that God’s sun rises on the evil and on the good, and He sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. Do you understand what this means, my Brothers and Sisters? It means that God not only blesses His people, but He also blesses the enemy and his minions. The other day, as I watched the demoniac hum as he arranged books, I realized that God was blessing him, just like he blesses all of us, His children.
And I believe this has been the case throughout history. Many evil people have been thoroughly blessed by God, even as they were rejecting the Almighty and going straight to Hell after they died.
Here is the kicker of why our LORD would do what appears to us to be this grave injustice. First, I firmly believe our LORD loves demons, that He has always desired that they repent of their evil ways, but God knows that they never will, for His Word has predicted that they never will repent. I wrote in another blog about how the fates of the devil and his demons was sealed at Calvary, when our LORD Jesus gave up His Spirit, so that we, His followers, would be reconciled to the Father. The act of Jesus dying did something else, too; it condemned the devil and his demons to Hell forever. I believe that up to that point, they all still had a chance to repent, but they wouldn’t, and God knew they wouldn’t.
And here is the ultimate reason that God blesses the righteous and the unrighteous: for the righteous, it shows us his unfailing love, and that we can trust Him fully; for the unrighteous, they will have no excuse at all at the Judgment of Christ. They will not be able to turn to Christ and say, you never blessed me. In fact, some unrighteous people have been some of the most blessed people in history. I mean, how many times have you heard of an evil person who lives like a king or a queen. Yet, they never give God the glory for what they have. And that is the difference between us and them. We always give God the glory for everything He has given us. I know that I give God the glory for the very air that I breathe, for the water that I drink, and for the food He provides everyday. The unrighteous person will eat a sumptuous meal and not even think of thanking our Blessed LORD for it.
In conclusion, it is completely true that the enemy of our souls and his minions are completely incapable of blessing anyone, including themselves. Their hatred for God and God’s people is such that they can only sow corruption, death, and destruction, and not only that, they cannibalize each other. That’s how horrible they are.
But, the One who Blesses is our LORD, the KING. He will return one day, and, as the Prince of Peace, He will bring abundant blessings to His people. Amen and Amen and Amen, my Brothers and Sisters in the LORD.
